DESCRIPTION: Colorado UpLIFT began in 1982 with a vision to place minority high school students in summer jobs. Although over 200 companies employed 1,400 young people, it became clear that UpLIFT was reaching students too late. Educational under-achievement and negative work attitudes were tragic realities already blocking the high school students¿ long-term success. From this lesson, UpLIFT invited the most successful students from its job placement program to teach fourth and fifth graders the benefits of positive values, teamwork and education. To accomplish this, local schools invited UpLIFT to teach classes during the school day (called the In-School Program). The In-School Program was then supplemented with after-school activities. The In-School and After-School Programs are the bedrock of Colorado UpLIFT. This lesson shifted the way UpLIFT administers its programs. UpLIFT currently works in five Denver Public high schools.
