DESCRIPTION: Reef Check is the world¿s largest coral reef program involving recreational divers and marine scientists. Reef Check started in 1997 in Hong Kong where the first global survey of coral reefs was carried out with over 315 reefs surveyed in 31 countries and territories in all tropical oceans. The program is now based in Los Angeles and is driven by thousands of volunteers in over 60 countries who participate in Reef Check each year in an effort to sustain the world¿s coral reefs. Reef Check has three major goals: 1.To increase public awareness about the value of coral reefs,threats to their health and solutions to these problems by involving communities in monitoring and managing their reefs at the local level; 2.To collect a scientifically accurate,globally comparable dataset that allows us to track important trends in coral reef health; 3.To provide local reef managers with the tools and resources necessary to manage their reefs at a community level. | |
