DESCRIPTION:
The Fire and Police Commission is a civilian body which oversees general policy in the Milwaukee Fire Department and the Milwaukee Police Department. The commission is responsible for hiring and acts as the employment agency for the two public safety Departments. Responsibility for day to day operations of the Departments rests with their chiefs. Commission functions include recruitment and testing for entry-level positions in the Fire and Police Departments; testing for promotional positions; hearing appeals by members of either Deparments who have been disciplined by their chief; hearing citizen complaints; and policy oversight.
